Nikhitha (Breast Cancer Survivor)

Nikhitha (Breast Cancer Survivor)

It all began with a lump

In September 2020, I noticed a lump in my breast. I went for a check-up. Initially, the doctor said that there was nothing to worry about, but it was diagnosed as breast cancer in a further test. I was shocked by the news. But the doctor comforted me. He said, It is nothing. You will be cured in just one week after the surgery. it is the initial stage, so there is nothing to worry about. But I could not understand anything; Later, I went for a second opinion. But this time also, it was confirmed as breast cancer.

Diagnosis and treatment

Once it was diagnosed, the doctor suggested that I needed to go for surgery and I would be alright in a week. I was lost at that time. So many things were revolving in my mind. It was emotional as well as financial. As the doctor had told me that it would take just one week in post-surgery recovery, I took leave for a week and started planning for it.

Support from Friends

I am grateful to my friends and my loved ones who stood with me in my difficult time. I will treasure moments with them for life. My friends took my report and shared it with all the concerned person to gather maximum information about it. One of my friends came to be with me during the surgery. Without their support, it could be impossible.

Side effects of the treatment

Two weeks after surgery, radiation started. It was a very tough time for me. I was finding it very difficult to manage the situation. My friend had also left by the time, so managing everything alone was difficult. Now I have to go for hormone replacement therapy for one year, and hopefully my treatment will get over.

Lifestyle changes

Cancer is a lifestyle disease. With the changes in lifestyle, we can lead a healthy life. Post-treatment, I have quit smoking and drinking. I take proper care of my diet. I always avoid fried food as much as possible. Exercise has become a part of my routine. I believe that with proper diet and lifestyle, we can manage a healthy life in cancer.

Medical insurance

Medical insurance is a must. After being diagnosed with cancer, The first thing that came to my mind was how I would manage the whole treatment. Thankfully, I had medical insurance, so it was not a burden. I suggest everyone to take medical insurance; it will help in an emergency.
