Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis
It was in 2017 when my mother had a general check-up, and nothing major came out of it. It was just her thyroid that was a little bit outside, so the doctors started medicines for the same. After taking the thyroid medicines, she started coughing a lot.
When her thyroid level decreased, we reduced the medicines. Then in January, a lot of bloating started. Later, she was not able to eat normally and was Vomiting a lot.
Again, during all these tests, nothing came out, and it was misdiagnosed as some liver problem. But by the end of March, we went to the hospital to have a proper Ultrasound so that we could understand what exactly it was and do a Biopsy if needed.
When the doctor did the ultrasound, he found that there was some growth, so he suggested that we should go for a CT scan. We did CT scan the very next day, and it came out as Third Stage Ovarian Cancer. We went for a PET scan also, and that too confirmed the same.

We started her Chemotherapy sessions, and we also did a lot of alternative treatment with the consultation of a nutritionist. After some Chemotherapy sessions, she developed an infection around her Chemotherapy port, and that took a lot of time to heal. We had to remove that Chemotherapy port and do it again, but again, it got infected.
After three Chemotherapy sessions, we did a PET scan, and the results were very good. Then we planned surgery, but the doctor we wanted to do Surgery for her was not available at that time. So, we did one more Chemotherapy cycle before going for Surgery.
The Surgery was planned on 2nd July and it went well as planned. But post-surgery, she started having rapid fever. One day her fever was so intense that she almost collapsed in the hospital. She was taken in the ICU and was put onto the ventilator since, her hands and everything had started going blue due to lack of oxygen.
She was on a ventilator for almost a week before she came out. But after she came out of ICU, some other problem started every other day, so, for a month, we were in the hospital.
She was going through many tests every day and was taking a lot of medicines, but still she wasn't recovering. So, we decided to shift her to a different hospital. She got good care in there, and almost in 15 days, the doctor took her out of all the antibiotics. Finally, in August, she came back home.
There were still some cancer cells left, so the doctor asked to do more rounds of chemotherapy, which was tough for her, but she went through it. She was suffering from a lot of things including mental trauma and weakness, but positivity and spirituality, meditation, and listening to soothing music helped her a lot.
But after the operation, she developed a hernia. So, it has to be operated now, but has been postponed indefinitely due to corona, since we can't go for operation in this situation. It's been almost a year and a half, and things are okay now.
The Ovarian Cancer Foundation- Sashakt
Later, my sister read a lot about ovarian cancer, and found out that there are a lot of cases where patients don't get diagnosed at time. So, she started an NGO called Sashakt- The Ovarian Cancer Foundation. She has held a lot of sessions about Ovarian Cancer awareness in schools and society so that people become aware about the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer that will help in the early detection of the disease.
