Safety first

Movement that fits alongside your treatment

What it is

  • Gentle, adapted yoga, breathing and exercise led by experts who work with cancer patients
  • Supportive care that runs alongside your chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other treatment
  • Sessions that change with your energy, blood counts and treatment cycle

What it is not

  • A treatment for cancer, or a replacement for your oncologist’s advice
  • A replacement for physiotherapy or rehabilitation prescribed by your hospital
  • A reason to change or delay any treatment; those decisions stay with your oncology team

Pause and contact your treating team first if you have

  • Fever during chemotherapy
  • Very low blood counts or platelets
  • New bone pain or new weakness in the legs
  • Chest pain or sudden breathlessness
  • Dizziness, fainting or new confusion
  • Bleeding, or pain or vomiting that is not controlled

For any of these, contact your treating hospital or go to emergency care. Do not wait for a session or a call back.

Why exercise during treatment: the ASCO guideline (Ligibel et al., 2022) recommends regular aerobic and resistance exercise during treatment to reduce side effects such as fatigue and help maintain fitness.

Yoga & exercise FAQs

Is yoga safe during chemotherapy or radiation?

For most people, gentle and adapted yoga and exercise is safe during treatment, and the ASCO guideline encourages staying active through cancer treatment. Your instructor adjusts every session to your energy, blood counts and treatment cycle. Please check with your oncologist before you start, and skip a session on days with fever, very low counts or new pain.

What if the patient is very weak or mostly in bed?

Sessions can start with breathing practice and gentle chair or bed-based movement, then build up slowly as strength returns. For very low energy, Personalized Care with one-on-one sessions is usually the better start, so the instructor can work at your pace.

How do online sessions work, and what do I need?

Sessions are live on video, so you can join from your phone or laptop at home. You need a quiet space, a mat or a sturdy chair, comfortable clothes and water nearby. Your cancer coach shares the schedule and joining details after you enrol.

Group sessions or personalized care: which should I choose?

Group Sessions suit most patients who can manage light activity: daily classes covering yoga, pranayama and gentle exercise, with the motivation of others on the same journey. Personalized Care suits people recovering from surgery, living with swelling or lymphedema, or with very low stamina, who need a plan built around their limits. Our patient counselor can help you choose on a free call.

Can I join after surgery, with a port or with lymphedema?

Yes, once your surgeon is comfortable with you starting gentle movement. Tell us about your surgery, port or lymphedema when you enrol: your instructor avoids strain on the area and follows any advice from your surgeon, physiotherapist or lymphedema therapist.

Does yoga replace my cancer treatment?

No. Yoga and exercise work alongside your chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other treatment, from any hospital, to help you feel stronger and calmer day to day. Treatment decisions always stay with your oncology team.
