Grape Seed Extract Kills Prostate Cancer Cells

Grape Seed Extract Kills Prostate Cancer Cells

Grape seed has been known to have medicinal properties for ages. It has been used in traditional medicines in many cultures for treating various ailments. Recent studies have established that it can be linked to treating cancer. You might be aware of the usage of grape seed extract for prostate cancer treatment. Let’s delve into this topic briefly.

Grapeseed is a gift of nature. Nature has got tons of cancer fighters. Many fruits and vegetables have some kind of chemopreventive agent. Speaking of grape seed extract (GSE), it contains lots of antioxidants. The interest of consumers has peaked because the antioxidants in the grape seed are superior to even Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Besides, why the demand for grape seed for cancer prevention is increasing can be attributed to the high content of antioxidants in the form of proanthocyanidins.

In addition to prostate cancer, GSE has also demonstrated the ability to suppress the growth of tumour cells in human breast, lung, and gastric cancer cell lines. The proanthocyanidins contained in GSE have a wide range of chemical defence properties against free radicals and oxidative stress.

Grape seed extract for prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is quite common and is one of the leading causes of death in the US due to cancer. It is treatable in the early stages but is diagnosed late. This may be because the symptoms don't show up in some cases. Treatment of prostate cancer can take a financial toll on the patient. So, there is a need for an approach that is cost-effective for patients. A healthy person can take it as a chemopreventive. The grape seed extract is the right candidate for this.

There is plenty of evidence to prove the cancer-fighting ability of grape seed extract. A recent study conducted by Dr. Alpna Tyagi, a researcher of Indian origin has found the most active component present in the grape seed extract, i.e., B2G2 to bring apoptosis in the prostate cancer cells without touching the surrounding healthy cells. This piece of study, published in the Nutrition and Cancer journal, is crucial because we didn’t know the most active component until now.

Research on effectiveness

It was already known about the chemopreventive nature of grape seed extract but this study corroborated this fact further. With this recent study, we know why the grape seed is effective against prostate cancer. B2G2 has a dramatic effect on prostate cancer cells. It inhibits the growth of prostate cancer PC 3 cells. Hence, it can be a drug for treating prostate cancer.

Another research says about histone acetylation. The histone acetylation process is regulated by histone acetyltransferase (HAT). Deacetylase is an epigenetic mechanism that affects eukaryotic transcription. Histone acetylation changes are cancer-related. Therefore, manipulating the acetylation status of key gene targets may be important for effective cancer treatment.

Grape Seed Extract (GSE) has a known protective effect against prostate cancer. Here we show that GSE significantly inhibited HAT activity in vitro by 30-80%. In addition, GSE-mediated androgen receptor (AR) in prostate cancer cells was mediated by expressing luciferase activity using a pGL3PSA construct with an AR element in the measured human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP. It showed significant inhibition of transcription. Let's not go any more technical. There is much clinical evidence published so far all with promising results and effects. Many more studies are still going on to explore every day.

How to take GSE?

Not just prostate cancer, GSE has shown to be effective against a whole bunch of numerous cancers like colon, breast, skin, and lung cancer. It is slowly becoming a popular dietary supplement choice for cancer patients and all others who want to boost their health.

You can incorporate this remarkable chemopreventive agent into your lifestyle to reduce the risk of so many cancers. It comes in all sorts of concentrations and forms to give you the benefits of GSE. You can choose the liquid form or take it as an oral pill or capsule. Usage: Add 10 drops of liquid grape seed extract concentrate to fresh juice or water. Drink it with or without food. You can take the solution upto 3 times a day. If you take capsules, take 1 capsule once or twice daily.

When to avoid GSE?

If you are taking warfarin or other anticoagulants then you should avoid GSE intake. According to laboratory studies, grape seeds can increase the risk of bleeding. You are taking a CYP3A4 substrate drug and or, UGT substrate drugs. Laboratory studies suggest that grape seeds may increase the risk of side effects.

Summing up

We have gone through how grape seed extract can be useful in treating prostate cancer. GSE can also be useful for prostate cancer prevention for men since prostate cancer can go undetected so easily. Grapeseed is not only effective against prostate cancer but it has shown to work wonders against many other types of cancer like lung, skin, breast, and colon cancer as well. Each day comes up with a newer and better approach to using this natural drug.
