Homoeopathy

INTRODUCTION

One of the most prevalent alternative therapies utilized by cancer patients is homoeopathy. It was discovered in Germany in the late 1700s. Homoeopathy’s primary idea is that ‘like cures like’. As a result, in homoeopathy, the homoeopath utilizes tiny amounts of a drug that can elicit sickness symptoms if used in big doses. These modest amounts are thought to give a molecular blueprint that activates the body’s mending systems.

Homoeopathy follows the principle of “like heals like,” which states that a minimal quantity of a material that generates a symptom in a healthy person can cure the ailment. A homoeopathic dose, in principle, boosts the body’s healing and self-regulation mechanisms.

Principle and idea

“Like cures like” is a core principle of homoeopathy. To put it another way, anything that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat a sickness that has similar symptoms in a minimal quantity. This idea is supposed to activate the body’s defence mechanisms.

Red onion, for example, irritates the eyes. It’s for this reason that it’s found in homoeopathic allergy medicines. Poison ivy, white arsenic, crushed entire bees, and a plant called arnica are all used as treatments for different diseases.

According to homoeopathic doctors, these ingredients are weakened by adding water or alcohol (also known as “homoeopaths”). According to homoeopaths, the mixture is then shaken in a process known as “potentization,” They believe the healing essence is transferred. The low dose of homoeopath medicine results in more efficiency. Many of these remedies no longer contain any of the original substance’s molecules. Sugar pellets, liquid drops, creams, gels, and tablets are just some of the ways they’re used.

A homoeopath will ask you a series of questions about your mental, emotional, and physical well-being during your consultation. They’ll give you the medication that matches all of your symptoms the best.

Homoeopathic medicine preparation

Potentisation is the process of diluting and shaking homoeopathic medications repeatedly. According to homoeopaths, makes medicines capable of boosting the body’s inherent healing powers.

Although there is no chemical evidence of the original material in the medication after the 12th dilution, homoeopaths think the preparation preserves the characteristics of the actual substance.

How can we take it?

Your homoeopath will ask you a series of questions during your first visit. These will cover your health, lifestyle, diet, and medical background. They’ll inquire about your sleeping habits, mood, and feelings.

This information aids the homoeopath in determining which remedies are most appropriate for you. Unlicensed drugs are referred to as such.

A 45-minute consultation is typical. The length of subsequent appointments could be reduced.

There are several types of homoeopathic remedies:

tablets\sgranules\spowders\sliquid

They can be consumed orally, as creams, or as drops. Your therapist will instruct you on how and when to take your medications.

They’ll also tell you when you should return for another appointment to see if your condition has improved.

The circumstances have improved. They may propose that you return a few times if you have a long-term (chronic) condition.

Your homoeopath can request any changes in your symptoms or condition.

Over-the-counter medicines for homoeopathy are available. They can be available in pharmacies and health food stores. Unlicensed medicines include homoeopathic remedies. As a result, the chemist will not create these medications specifically for you.

Homoeopathic treatments are also available to purchase online. However, you should be aware that receiving the correct remedy is not guaranteed. Alternatively, it may be of good quality. (Homeopathy | Complementary Therapy | Cancer Research UK, n.d.)

Homoeopathic treatment

To design a treatment plan for a person, a homoeopath will analyze all of the person’s symptoms (physical, mental, and emotional) and choose the remedy that can produce symptoms most “like” the person is experiencing in a healthy person. Homoeopathic remedies come in a variety of forms, including liquid, granules, powder, and pills. As part of your treatment approach, your doctor may suggest general lifestyle and dietary adjustments.

According to homoeopaths, symptoms might sometimes get worse before they get better. This symptom ‘aggravation’ may be part of the homoeopathic treatment(The Evidence for Homeopathy, n.d.).

Homoeopathic medicines and vaccines

A ‘homoeopathic vaccination’ does not exist. Immunization is a medical term that describes the process of stimulating the body to build resistance to a wide range of pathogens. Vaccines are manufactured from germs and function by activating the body’s immune system to make antibodies (specialized germ-fighting cells).

Homoeopathic remedies are not an appropriate substitute for conventional vaccines because they do not rely on specific antibodies or germ-fighting cells to work. According to Australian Government recommendations, the Victorian Department of Health reminds parents that they should have their children immunize their children. (Ernst, 2010)

Health benefits

Cancer and Homeopathy

They utilize homoeopathic remedies to target tumours in one technique directly. As a result, the homoeopath selects remedies based on the tumour’s symptoms. The primary goal is to stop the tumour from growing. They utilize remedies to boost cell detoxification and treat eliminative channels such as the kidneys, urinary tract, liver, and so on in another method. The homoeopath uses this method to try to detoxify specific drugs. A homoeopath tries to address the patient’s entire constitution. The patient’s physical, emotional, and mental symptoms are noted, and a constitutional cure is prescribed. This targets and resolves the energy beneath the tumour, potentially resulting in the tumour’s removal. Apart from these methods, many patients turn to homoeopathy as a supplemental therapy that provides the following advantages:

  • It aids in mind and bodily relaxation.
  • Patients report feeling more prepared to deal with stress, worry, and despair.
  • It lessens the symptoms and adverse effects of other treatments, such as pain and exhaustion.

Much research has been undertaken throughout the years to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of homoeopathic remedies in cancer therapy and care. While most investigations found inadequate evidence to draw any conclusions, several studies showed preliminary evidence supporting homoeopathy’s usefulness in cancer treatment. (Gras et al., 2019)

For three months, 112 participants in this bigger RCT evaluated the possible positive benefits of a mixture of 42 oral homoeopathic medications to placebo pills. There was no evidence that homoeopathy benefited rheumatoid arthritis pain, morning stiffness, or mobility. (Rheumatoid Arthritis | Causes, Symptoms, Treatments, n.d.)

In osteoarthritis

Three RCTs of either oral or topical homoeopathic treatment for osteoarthritis were identified in a comprehensive review; two studies involved people with knee osteoarthritis, and one trial included participants with hip and knee osteoarthritis:

  • For one month, 65 patients were given the homoeopathic treatments Rhus Toxicodendron and Lac Vaccinum by mouth, as well as placebo drops and paracetamol tablets.

The two therapy groups in this experiment experienced a considerable but similar reduction in pain.

  • The second trial examined 600 mg of fenoprofen (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine), placebo pills, and placebo drops in 36 patients for two weeks.

Only those who took fenoprofen saw a substantial reduction in pain in the second trial.

  • SRL, a homoeopathic medicine applied to the skin, compared to piroxicam (an NSAID gel) in 184 participants for four weeks in the third trial.

In this third trial, participants who were given SRL experienced minor discomfort while walking.

In fimbriomyagalia

For four weeks, 62 patients with fibromyalgia were given homoeopathic drops recommended by a homoeopath and taken by mouth versus oral placebo drops.

Compared to the placebo group, those who took the homoeopathic medicine had a significant improvement in tender points, pain levels, and overall quality of life.

In a four-week study, 30 participants were administered Rhus Toxicodendron by mouth vs placebo pills. Compared to the placebo group, participants given homoeopathic drops had considerably more tender points and had a higher quality of life.

Side-effects

It is generally safe to use homoeopathic medicine. Some homoeopaths advise patients to expect their symptoms to worsen at first. Then it’ll calm down and get better. However, it is not a common occurrence.

In 2016, scientists conducted a comprehensive review. The study refers to a group of experts compiling all of the evidence on a specific topic. They then go over it to see if there is any supporting evidence.

The researchers reviewed a total of 41 studies. Homoeopathy had no more negative effects than placebos, according to the researchers. Many studies on homoeopathy, according to the researchers, did not report any side effects.

The National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH) in the United States has warned about specific complementary and integrative health practices. (Kassab et al., 2009)

Conclusion

Homoeopathy is a type of complementary medicine that works on the principle of treating “like with like.” Homoeopathy claims to promote illness healing by giving healthy people chemicals that imitate sickness symptoms. Medical science disagrees over the efficacy of homoeopathic remedies. Without your doctor’s knowledge and agreement, you should never cease taking conventional medications.
