Min pappa var 63 år gammal och fick diagnosen urinblåsancancer. Han visade till en början symtom som smärtsam urinering, men han tog lätt på det och betraktade det som ett prostataproblem. Han började dock blöda efter en vecka och insåg att det var ett större problem. Urologen föreslog en uroskopi och biopsi, där vi fick reda på att han hade cancer i stadium 1.

Den var begränsad till slemhinnan i urinblåsan och hade inte spridit sig till musklerna. Det var alltså en stor chans att överleva. Vidare föreslog läkarna att en procedur för att ta bort urinblåsan skulle leda till en högre överlevnad. Så urinledaren skulle vara ansluten till tarmen, vilket är hur hans kropp skulle fungera smidigt.

Skepticism och acceptans:

Till en början var vi skeptiska till det. Läkaren föreslog dock att vi skulle träffa en patient som precis skulle skrivas ut. Han var bara 25 år gammal och hade tagit bort urinblåsan. Att se honom acceptera sin stomatala öppning så graciöst inspirerade min far.
