The journey began in late 2017; my wife, Pooja, felt a lump in her left breast. For some reason, she kept the news to herself, thinking she could manage it, and it was only in February 2018 that we had the first mammogram done. I clearly remember the day we got the report because it coincided with our only daughters birthday. We got the results, and her cancer was categorized at stage 5, which means that 95% of the tumor was malignant.

Poojas mother was also a cancer survivor, and she was diagnosed in her late 50s, but she overcame the disease and is still a very healthy person in her 70s. The fact that both the women had cancer scares me because I have a daughter, and I wouldnt want her to go through this.

Initially, like everyone else, our first reaction was shock, but the news did not even sink in for us. We questioned why it was happening to her and why we received the information, especially on our daughters birthday, which was supposed to be a day of celebration. Pooja put up a mask and gave me the strength we all needed to get through this. 

From her familys side, her mother was particularly shocked because she had walked her daughters journey, and there is nothing more painful in life than to see your children suffer. I could see the pain that my mother-in-law was going through.

Cure a cui è stata sottoposta

She went through all the treatments we could get our hands on. She smiled, trusted every doctor we came across, and did not doubt anything. She went through a multi-faceted treatment. We started with Ayurveda and went with it for a couple of months, after which we went for immunotherapy. I was going through all the medical journals then, and there was a Nobel prize for immunotherapy, so that gave us some hope. 

It took us some time to realize that commercialization is better than everything else. After immunotherapy, we chose to go for mainstream treatment, which involved the mastectomy of the left breast, followed by first-generation chemotherapy and a round of radioterapia. 

Dopo aver subito tutti questi trattamenti, è stata sottoposta a terapia ormonale. Entro sei-otto mesi, anche la terapia ormonale non ha funzionato ei medici le hanno consigliato di rimuovere le ovaie poiché il cancro era più guidato dagli estrogeni. Quello è stato un altro intervento chirurgico che ha subito e, successivamente, è stata sottoposta a chemioterapia orale di seconda generazione, che era anche terapia ormonale. 

Ma le cose non erano sotto controllo dopo questo, e ha provato molto dolore perché il cancro si era metastatizzato alla colonna vertebrale e alle ossa dell'anca. È stata nuovamente sottoposta a radioterapia, che non ha funzionato, ed è andata per il terzo ciclo di chemioterapia. Abbiamo anche provato brevemente l'approccio integrativo e incluso il supporto supplementare nelle terapie che stava già assumendo.

Ci sono stati bei momenti in questo viaggio in cui sentivamo che stavamo vincendo la battaglia, ma ogni volta che il cancro faceva due passi indietro, tornava con una forza quattro volte superiore. Abbiamo esaurito le opzioni da provare e poi è stata sottoposta a chemioterapia di terza generazione. Tutto ciò stava influenzando molto il suo sistema immunitario. E siamo venuti a conoscenza della terapia genica che veniva praticata principalmente in Giappone, e questo è stato durante il primo blocco, quindi non potevamo nemmeno viaggiare all'interno del paese. 

Questi erano i trattamenti che ha subito e possiamo dare la colpa a uno qualsiasi di questi trattamenti. Ho provato tutto quello che potevo trovare per lei. C'erano molti esperti nel Regno Unito e negli Stati Uniti, e io ero solito fare una telefonata con loro per avere le loro opinioni su cosa avremmo potuto fare, e Pooja accettava tutto senza domande ma solo con speranza. 

Comorbidità dovute al trattamento

I medici li chiamano gli effetti collaterali del trattamento, ma credo che si tratti di comorbidità. A causa del sovraccarico dei trattamenti, il suo sistema immunitario si è completamente rotto. Tutto ciò la portò a non avere energia ea perdere l'appetito, insieme all'indurimento delle unghie e alla perdita dell'udito, e divenne molto anemica. E con il progredire della malattia, tutti questi piccoli sintomi si sono accumulati e hanno causato insufficienza epatica. 

Cose che mi hanno aiutato durante il viaggio

I never looked for ways to cope with the whole process. Pooja took everything that was given to her head on, and seeing her be so brave, motivated me to provide the best I could for us to win the battle and that motivation took me through the journey without any second thoughts. Her strength kept me moving; if it werent for her, I would have lost this battle much earlier. 

Un'altra cosa importante è che abbiamo contattato gruppi di supporto e parlato con molte persone che stavano attraversando la stessa situazione. E non lo dico per offendere nessuno, ma a volte una persona che ha vissuto la tua stessa esperienza ti capisce meglio di chiunque ti sia vicino. 

Il mio consiglio a tutti coloro che leggono

Ci sono alcune cose che mi piace dire ai malati di cancro e agli operatori sanitari,

My advice to cancer patients is not to take any symptoms lightly and get thorough checkups. The earlier you identify a problem, the better the chances of cure. If its advanced cancer, please dont look for a cure and follow aggressive treatment. Quality of life is far better than longevity. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, the cure is still not there for advanced cases, and miracles are rare. When you are on this journey, its far more critical to make changes to your lifestyle eat healthy, physical well-being, mental health, etc. Your health comes first and then your familys health. Live every moment.

Il mio consiglio agli operatori sanitari sarebbe di prendersi cura della propria salute mentale unendosi al giusto sistema di supporto. Preparati, potrebbe essere un lungo periodo e devi avere pazienza e risorse per combattere questa battaglia. Vivi ogni momento, sii la loro forza e ricava tutti i cambiamenti necessari per sostenere te stesso o il paziente.
